Dress Code for Kids' Classes

Part of enjoying dance class and doing our best includes following the discipline of the dance dress code. Just like a team uniform, wearing appropriate dancewear allows students to move efficiently and the teachers to instruct on safe and proper body alignment. Some classes have specific hair instructions, but hair should always be pulled back and away from the face to minimize distractions. Families are encouraged to choose the presented options that best suit their dancer(s).

Jazz and Musical Theater (All Ages)

Dancers may wear any leotard with tights or dance shorts/leggings OR dance shorts/leggings with a fitted Monarch Movement Company tank or tee (sold in studio). Emphasis on fitted so we may see the dancer's alignment! Shoes for jazz and musical theater are tan jazz booties without ties. Hair should be pulled back in a bun, braid, pigtails, or pony.

Hip Hop (All Ages)

Dancers may wear any dance shorts/leggings with a leotard OR fitted Monarch Movement Company tank or tee (sold in studio). Any clean, comfortable sneaker with non-marking soles will be great for Hip Hop. Hair should be pulled back in a bun, braid, pigtails, or pony.

Lyrical, Contemporary, and Modern (All Ages)

Dancers may wear any leotard with tights or dance shorts/leggings OR dance shorts/leggings with a fitted Monarch Movement Company tank or tee (sold in studio). Emphasis on fitted so we may see the dancer's alignment. Tights must be footless or convertible so that feet are exposed! Dancers in modern class should be sure to have a long sleeved shirt with them at every class. Knee pads are optional for modern. Shoes for 2nd-5th Grade are foot undeez that best match the dancer's skin tone. Middle and High School dancers will practice lyrical in bare feet. Hair should be pulled back in a bun, braid, pigtails, or pony.

Tiny Dancer (Ages 18 months - 3 years)

Dancers may wear any dancewear that isn't distracting to the dancer and brings them joy! Tights are optional, but remember that putting ballet shoes on sweaty feet is much easier with tights! Dancers should wear leather, full sole ballet shoes, traditionally pink for girls and black for boys. Families are encouraged to choose the presented options that best suit their dancer.  We strongly suggest a shoe without a drawstring. Hair should be pulled back away from the face.

Preschool Ballet/Tap or Ballet/Tap/Tumble Combo (Ages 3-5)

Dancers may wear any dancewear that isn't distracting to the dancer and brings them joy! Tights are strongly preferred, but optional. Tights will need to be footless or convertible if the class includes tumble so that they may tumble in their bare feet. Remember that putting ballet shoes on sweaty feet is much easier with tights and tap shoes may rub uncomfortably on bare feet. Shoes for ballet are leather, full sole ballet shoes, traditionally in pink for girls and black for boys. We strongly suggest a shoe without a drawstring. Shoes for tap are black, patent leather mary jane tap shoes with a velcro strap for girls and a black lace-up tap shoe for boys. Families are encouraged to choose which of these shoe options best suits their dancer. Hair should be pulled back in a bun, braid, pigtails, or pony.
